What kind of wedge sets should be used for the 709-alignment process?

QUESTION

What kind of wedge sets should be used for the 709-alignment process?

ANSWER

For alignment specimens, it is recommended to use either Surfalloy-coated wedges, or smooth. The intent is to avoid putting marks on the specimen. Smooth wedges are less than half the cost of Surfalloy wedges but are de-rated. This means that if you pull too hard during alignment validation, the specimen may slip out. Generally, you do not need to pull that hard for validation-level loading.
