Temposonics R-Series (SSI) Output Displacement Transducer Setup

QUESTION

How do I set up a Temposonics R-Series (SSI) Output Displacement Transducer?

ANSWER

Temposonics Transducer Setup Instructions:

Configuring the Hwi File

Open the Hwi Editor from your start menu (Figure 1).

Figure 1 – Configuring Hardware for a Temposonics Device in the Hwi File Editor

Click on a 494.47 or 494.49 hardware then select Encoder as the type under the Properties Tab.   Choose the correct series of Temposonics device you are using.

Enter the Resolution (bits).   To determine this value, refer to the Product Data Sheet and part number for your device.  In the example below, using part number RH80600MP021S2B6100 found on the device (Figure 2), we can determine the resolution (Data Length), position 14 on the Product Data Sheet to be 24 bits using the provided codes (Figure 3).

If you are using an R-series device, select the baud rate and use the table in your product data sheet to determine the value to enter (Figure 5).

Save the changes to the .hwi file and exit.

Setting up the Configuration File

Open Station Builder from the Start Menu (Figure 5).  Click on any of the control modes under the channel you want to add the Temposonics transducer to.  Find the 494.47 or 494.49 encoder under the Hardware Tab for Input Resources and click on the add symbol  to assign this hardware to the Temposonics device.  Change the Internal and Display names to what you like and select the proper units.  Save the configuration file and exit.

Building the Parameter Set in Station Manager

Open Station Manager and choose Calibration as the user level from the dropdown menu list. Open the Station Setup Window under the Display Menu.    Click on the control mode for the Temposonics device under your channel name.  Click on the Calibrations Tab to enter the parameters (Figure 7).

In the example below, using part number RH80600MP021S2B6100 found on the device (Figure 2), we can determine the resolution, position 16 on the Product Data Sheet to be 0.002mm and the range to be 0mm to 600 mm using the provided codes (Figure 6).

After entering the calibration parameters, save them under the File menu in the Station Manager Window.   You do not need to build and save a sensor file if you save the parameters typically for a Temposonics device.

Note: Temposonics Product Data Sheets can be found at the following Website:

http://www.mtssensors.com/

Go to the Products Page > Industrial Sensors > Identify the first 2 digits in your Model Number to identify which Tempo device you have then open the appropriate PDF Data Sheet.

The temposonics R requires 24V and the 494.47 will not supply enough voltage and may cause performance problems.  You need a Y-cable that can draw 24V off an auxiliary output like the J49 connnector.

If you are unable to enter the resolution you need in the software you may need to change the resolution setting.  Click your mouse pointer on Resoluion to open the Resolution configuration window.

There you can change the slider resolution (Figure 9).
